Ho Ho Ho Healthy Christmas… Tips For Navigating The Holiday Feasts!

Next week is Christmas! Where has the time gone?

The holiday season is almost in full swing where it’s a time for family, joy and of course, delicious food. However, it can also be a time of overindulgence and unhealthy eating habits. Or I sometimes say, ‘It’s Christmas’. Which in my head makes it okay to eat 3 mince pies back to back…. I promise, I did an extra set at the gym.

But fear not! With a little planning and some smart choices, you can enjoy the festivities without compromising your health goals. Check out the tips below:

Mindful Eating:

  • Savour Each Bite: Pay attention to the taste, texture, and aroma of your food.

  • Portion Control: Use smaller plates and bowls to avoid overeating.

  • Listen to Your Body: Stop eating when you feel satisfied, not stuffed. Sometimes our eyes are bigger than our bellies.

Healthy Holiday Recipes:

  • Lighten Up Traditional Dishes: Use healthier ingredients like extra virgin olive oil instead of butter, and lean protein sources like turkey or fish.

  • Incorporate Veggies: Add colourful vegetables to your holiday meals, such as roasted brussels sprouts, green bean casserole, red cabbage, parsnips and carrots and so on.

  • Healthy Desserts: Opt for lighter desserts like fruit salad, sorbet, or sugar free cookies. If that is tough, maybe have a smaller slice of the usual.

Balance is Key:

  • Indulge in Moderation: It's okay to enjoy your favourite holiday treats, but do so in moderation.

  • Prioritise Nutrient Dense Foods: Fill your plate with fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to balance out the indulgent foods.

  • Stay Hydrated: No, not with beer, champagne or baileys! Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and avoid overeating.

Stay Active:

  • Incorporate Exercise: Make time for physical activity, such as going for a walk or doing a home workout. If you go for a walk, make it interesting. Find the best decorated house or have a bet with how many houses are decorated.

  • Participate in Festive Activities: Engage in holiday activities like ice skating, sledding, scavenger hunts, active games, or decorating your home.

Healthy Holiday Meal Ideas:

  • Roasted Turkey with Cranberry Sauce and Roasted Vegetables

  • Grilled Salmon with Lemon-Dill Sauce

  • Vegetarian Stuffed Peppers

  • Fruit Salad with Yogurt Dressing

  • Dark Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

By following these tips, hopefully you can enjoy a healthy and happy holiday season. Remember, it's all about balance and moderation.

I hope you all enjoy the gifts that Santa delivers and have a great time.
